Central West NSW Council Ensures Reliable UV Disinfection at Wastewater Treatment Plant
Applications: Agriculture & Irrigation,Mining,Stormwater,Wastewater

Project Background
A Central West NSW Council operates a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) that utilises UV disinfection as a critical stage in its treatment process. In mid-2022, the Council identified performance issues with its existing UV system ‒ a Trojan UV3000 ‒ including multiple failed lamps, sensor alarms, and wiper system faults. To restore compliance and ensure ongoing system reliability, the Council engaged UV Guard for specialised UV service support.

The Challenge
By mid-2022, the Council’s Trojan UV3000 at the WWTP was experiencing declining performance and frequent alarms. Multiple lamps were out across two banks, UVi readings were low or absent on some modules, and the mechanical wiper system was faulting. Several modules had been removed from the channel for troubleshooting, quartz sleeves showed heavy fouling and breakage in places, lamp leads were damaged, and at least one ballast had failed. Lamp runtime had exceeded recommended hours.
The Council needed a rapid, end-to-end service intervention to restore disinfection reliability and compliance, coupled with practical on-site training so operators could confidently maintain the system day-to-day. They also sought a single service partner capable of supporting multiple open-channel UV technologies on site (including a Xylem TAK55) to streamline parts, electrical upgrades, and future maintenance.

UV Requirements
The Council required:
- Full lamp replacement across two banks (64 lamps total)
- Inspection and refurbishment of quartz sleeves and seals
- Repair and recommissioning of failed UV modules
- Troubleshooting of control alarms and wiper system faults
- On-site operator training for improved ongoing maintenance
- Long-term service and parts support for multiple UV systems
The goal was to maximise disinfection performance, extend equipment life, and streamline UV maintenance across the facility.

UV Guard Solution
UV Guard deployed an experienced UV service technician to site to conduct a complete system refurbishment. Works performed included:
- Replaced 64 UV lamps
- Replaced O-rings and cleaned quartz sleeves; replaced severely fouled or damaged quartz
- Refurbished and refilled the wiper contact system
- Reconnected and replaced damaged lamp leads
- Identified and replaced faulty ballasts
- Reinstated modules removed from channel
- Simulated flow and UVT to verify system performance
- Provided practical UV maintenance training to on-site operators
- Annual lamp replacement programmes
- Quartz sleeve maintenance
- Wiper kit replacements
- Electrical refurbishment works, including new ballasts
- Supply of alternative parts for Trojan UV3000 and Xylem TAK55 systems
- UV Guard’s broad UV technology capability allowed the Council to consolidate maintenance for multiple UV systems with a single trusted partner.

Outcome
Through comprehensive servicing and ongoing support, UV Guard restored the UV3000 system to reliable operating condition and improved long-term plant resilience. Key results included:
- Recovery of full UV disinfection performance
- Reduced unplanned downtime and maintenance risk
- Extended equipment life through proactive component renewal
- Improved operator capability through hands-on training
- Single source support covering multiple UV brands and models
Central West NSW Council now benefits from a streamlined UV servicing programme and consistent system performance, supported by UV Guard’s expertise in municipal UV technology.
