Extending the Life of Discontinued Trojan UV4000 Channel UV Systems at Anglian Water

Applications: Wastewater

Client: Anglian Water Services Limited

Location: East of England, UK

Industry: Water & Wastewater Utilities

System Type: UV Intensity Sensor Retrofit

Application: Wastewater Treatment

Anglian Water Services Limited is one of the UK’s largest water and wastewater providers, responsible for maintaining critical treatment infrastructure across the East of England.
When one of its Trojan* UV 4000 disinfection systems fell out of manufacturer support, the site’s operations team needed a way to keep the units running without committing to a costly capital replacement.

This case study explores how UV Guard’s expert sourcing and custom retrofit engineering allowed Anglian Water to extend the working life of its existing UV assets.

The Challenge

Anglian Water was operating a number of Trojan UV 4000 disinfection systems that were no longer supported by the original manufacturer.

While standard service parts such as lamps and quartz sleeves remained available, the site was struggling to source replacement UV intensity probes, which is a component critical to the continued operation of the plant.

Without a reliable supply of sensors, Anglian Water risked losing the ability to accurately monitor UV dose, putting the long-term operation of the existing units, and compliance with treatment requirements, at risk.

The UV Guard Solution

UV Guard’s technical team identified that the required Trojan intensity probes were now obsolete, with no like-for-like replacement available on the market.

Rather than recommend a full system replacement, UV Guard engineered a custom retrofit solution that modified the existing sensor installation to accept a compatible UV Guard intensity probe. This allowed Anglian Water to keep its Trojan UV 4000 units in service.

A prototype sensor was supplied to Luke Ambrose, Senior WR Operations Technician at Anglian Water, for on-site testing. Following initial calibration adjustments based on real-world performance feedback, the retrofitted probe delivered accurate, reliable readings in line with the system’s requirements..

The Outcome

The custom UV Guard probe was installed and has performed effectively ever since, giving Anglian Water reliable UV intensity readings across its Trojan UV 4000 units.

By retrofitting rather than replacing existing infrastructure, Anglian Water maintained operational continuity and delivered substantial capital savings.

Following the success of the prototype, Anglian Water has since gone on to order additional units built to the same specification.
