“Financial and resourcing are probably the biggest challenges across the industry,” he explained, “and they’re not going to be able to progress either individually or as an industry without innovation and technology. So that’s really our future opportunity.”

Rather than viewing these constraints as barriers, Dean framed them as a catalyst. The path forward, he suggested, lies in adopting smarter technologies and rethinking established ways of working. “The water industry is just not the water providers,” he explained. “For us it’s our corporate members showing the latest technology. And then we’re in a privileged position to be able to run an event like this that brings everyone together so that we can share our learnings and experiences to better the industry that we love working in.”

He was equally direct about what this means in practice. “We can’t raise the standards without the corporate members,” he said. “No individual group will deliver transformation. It’s got to be collective.”

Without that collective group, we can’t deliver a step change. It’s definitely a team effort.”

Turning to the future, Dean was optimistic about the role technology and forward thinking businesses will play in shaping the industry towards 2030.

“To meet today’s financial and resourcing challenges, we need to work smarter, not harder,” he said. “Organisations like UV Guard will help us transform the industry, and we’ll do this as a collective group to deliver that 2030 vision.”

What excites him most is the prospect of leaving old habits behind. “We’re not going to do things continually in the same way that we did yesterday. This new technology is going to show us a way forward, and with some early adopters, we can transform this industry together.”
