Are you making the most of your rainwater? There’s no doubt that collecting rainwater is a smart choice for sustainable living, but making sure that rainwater is clean and safe for your family is the most important factor to look out for!
Rainwater can carry various contaminants, from debris and sediment to bacteria and viruses. That’s why whole home water filtration systems are on the rise among Australian homeowners. These systems provide a solution for purifying rainwater, and delivering clean, safe water to every tap in your house.
Let’s check out the world of whole home water filtration and see how you can make your water really sparkle!
Why Invest in a Whole Home Water Filtration System?
Whole home water filtration systems do more than just make your rainwater drinkable. They offer other benefits that protect your home and your family.
- Protection against pathogens: Rainwater can contain harmful bacteria, viruses, and parasites. A whole home filtration system removes these nasties, safeguarding your family’s health.
- Improved taste and odour: Chlorine, sediment, and other impurities can affect the taste and smell of your water. Filtration removes these unwanted elements, leaving you with fresh, pure water.
- Removal of harmful chemicals: Pesticides, herbicides, and other chemicals can find their way into rainwater. A whole home filter removes these toxins, making sure your water is safe for consumption and everyday use.
- Enhanced appliance lifespan: Sediment and other impurities can damage your appliances, leading to costly repairs or replacements. Filtered water helps your appliances run more efficiently and last longer.
- Reduced plumbing repairs: Hard water can cause scale build-up in your pipes, leading to leaks and other plumbing issues. Soft water from a whole home filter helps prevent these problems, saving you money in the long run.
Understanding Different Filtration Technologies
With so many whole home water filtration systems on the market, it can be tough to choose the right one for your home. Each technology has its strengths and weaknesses, making it important to understand the basics of each option before making a decision.
- Sediment filters: While effective at removing larger debris, they don’t address dissolved contaminants like chemicals or microorganisms.
- Activated carbon filters: Great for improving taste and odour, but they may not remove all harmful chemicals or pathogens.
- Reverse osmosis systems: Offer comprehensive filtration but can be expensive and may waste water during the process.
- UV disinfection: Effective at killing bacteria and viruses, but it doesn’t remove sediment or chemical impurities.
UV Guard’s CWP-Series shines as a complete rainwater purification solution, combining the strengths of multiple technologies while addressing their individual limitations.

Let’s take a look at how the CWP-Series filters and transforms rainwater into safe drinking water for your home.
Stage 1: Sediment Filtration. Think of this as your water’s first line of defence. The high-capacity sediment filter acts like a sieve, trapping larger particles like dirt, sand, and rust. This not only protects your appliances and plumbing but also prepares the water for the next stage of purification.
Stage 2: Adsorption. Now that the larger debris is gone, the silver-impregnated carbon block filter takes over. This powerful filter does double duty—it adsorbs chlorine, chemicals, and unpleasant odours, improving the taste and clarity of your water. Plus, the silver impregnation helps stop bacterial growth within the filter itself.
Stage 3: UV Disinfection. This is where the magic happens. The water enters a high-tech UV reactor, where powerful ultraviolet light destroys 99.99% of harmful bacteria and viruses. This chemical-free process ensures your water is safe and healthy for drinking, cooking and showering.
Installation and Maintenance
The CWP-Series comes pre-assembled, making installation a breeze. If you’re handy around the house, you can easily install it yourself by following the provided instructions. It’s a simple “plug and play” setup that connects to your existing plumbing.
If you prefer, you can always call a licensed plumber to handle the installation for you. Either way, you’ll be up and running with clean water in no time!
Regular maintenance is key to keeping your CWP-Series running at its best. Here’s what you need to know:
- Sediment pleated washable filter: Maintain this filter by washing or replacing it when you notice a drop in water pressure. The frequency of replacement depends on the quality of your water, but typically it needs to be replaced twice a year.
- Silver impregnated carbon block filter: This filter should be replaced when you notice a change in the water’s taste, colour, or odour, or if there’s a loss in water pressure. Like the sediment filter, it typically needs replacement twice a year.
- UV lamp: Replace the UV lamp annually (every 365 days) even if it appears to be functioning, as it will no longer emit the necessary UV radiation for proper disinfection. The UV controller will provide warnings when the lamp is nearing the end of its life or if it fails.
- Quartz sleeve and o-ring: The quartz sleeve protects the UV lamp from water, but it can get dirty over time, reducing the lamp’s effectiveness. Start by inspecting it two weeks after installation. If it’s clean, wait four weeks before checking again. If it’s still clean, check again after eight weeks. Continue extending the interval between checks until you determine how often it needs cleaning. Replace the sleeve every two years, or sooner if cleaning isn’t effective. Always replace the O-ring seal whenever you remove the quartz sleeve to prevent leaks.
